Telecommunications and Information Society Day - May 17th

Updated: May 20, 2022

Today, May 17 2022, is the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day. This day has been declared a day of celebration as it commemorates the creation of the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) in conjunction with the 1st International Telegraph Convention.

The agreement to celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day took place in Turkey in 2006 during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference. It has been decided to celebrate this day with the sole purpose of raising awareness about the wide options and possibilities offered by the use of the Internet as well as ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and how these two tools make a great contribution to societies.

ICTs are present in our daily lives even when we have not noticed, they are there. For example, when we play video games online, or if we check social networks, when we send an email or log in to mobile banking, ICTs are present in all these nooks and crannies.

ICTs are considered to offer great advantages to societies by allowing access to different information and knowledge bases.

Some of the benefits that technologies bring to our society are the following:

- Communication is increased

- Access to information

- Productivity is increased

- Advances in science

- Lower costs

- Worldwide communication and connectivity

And that is what this special day is all about: raising awareness of the possibilities offered by the use of the Internet and other ICTs. It also seeks to stimulate reflection and exchanges of ideas on the theme adopted by the Council and to discuss them with representatives of society. With the sole purpose of seeking new ideas, improving technology performance, and creating new links between countries and companies around the world.

The importance of information and communication technologies (ICTs)

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are present in all areas of life in our society. They form the basis of most services and even industry is hardly imaginable without ICTs. They are the key technologies for innovation. One of the most important information and communication technologies is the Internet. But the Internet is not equally open, accessible, and secure everywhere. This is why UNESCO has developed the concept of Internet Universality as a guiding framework for free digital communication. Germany was one of the first countries in the world to apply UNESCO's Internet Universality Indicators.

From LDNetworks and together with LDTelecom we want to give more importance to this special day. We are proud to be part of a network of companies working together to provide innovative solutions, network design, and maintenance.
